“That little rascal,” said Mr. Aguilar. “He outsmarted me again!”

I decided to do some investigating. Maybe there were other things I hadn’t noticed yesterday.

I walked up and down the counter. I had to step over a Rube Goldberg machine. I noticed one of the boards from yesterday hadn’t been used. It was still leaning against the counter like a ramp.

“Maybe Harry climbed down one of the boards,” I said.

Mr. Aguilar rubbed his beard. “I bet you’re right.”

I crouched on the floor next to the end of the board. I pretended I was a guinea pig.

Where would I go? I wondered.

Since Harry’s droppings were near the desk, I crawled that way. Then I found another clue!

“Mr. Aguilar, two of the food pellets I left are gone!” I exclaimed.

“You’re quite the detective, Azaleah,” he said. “Keep going with your investigation.”

I crawled all over the room. I had to crawl around our Rube Goldberg machines very carefully. I didn’t want to knock them over. Some of them were already tall. One of them had a block dangling from a string. Another one used a paper towel roll as a chute for the ball.

I didn’t stop crawling until I got to the bookshelf on the other side of the room. It was a lot of work.

I bet Harry is pretty tired, I thought.

On the bottom shelf I spotted an interesting book. It was called Raising Your Guinea Pig. That gave me another idea.

“Mr. Aguilar, can I borrow your guinea pig book?” I asked.

I knew that scientists did lots of reading to learn new things. They called it research. Maybe I could learn something that would help me find Harry.

“Sure,” he said. “The bell rang, though. You need to hurry to class.”

I hadn’t even heard the bell. I had been very focused on looking for clues. I took the book and stood up.

Before I left, I looked at the Rube Goldberg machines around the room. The other groups were doing a really good job.

Then I stared at ours. It was not creative. It was not complicated. There were no chain reactions. It wasn’t even tall. It would not impress anyone.

I sighed. I was not close to solving the Terrance problem. Not at all. But I might be closer to solving the guinea pig mystery. And that was a good start.
